DeLorean is back! They even have a Hot Wheels car to prove it.
It’s car week in Monterey, California! Capped off with the Pebble Beach Concours, the week-long celebration of all things motoring. So far, huge names like RUF, Bugatti, and Koenigsegg have all revealed brand new toys for the ultra rich. Oh yeah, and DeLorean too… wait, what?!
Yes, the famed automaker has been resurrected, although one could argue they never actually went away. In 1981, Stephen Wynne established the The DeLorean Motor Company in Houston, Texas. After the factory in Ireland shuttered its doors and John went to jail, Wynne’s company carried the torch for the brand. The car had such a following, the demand was always high for replacement parts for the stainless wonder, the Back to the Future star, and the car culture icon.
Now, some forty years later, it’s time to bring the legendary name plate back to life. DeLorean Reimagined LLC has just unveiled at Pebble Beach their DeLorean comeback prototype: the Alpha5. A few things are different this time around, however. Mainly, they have decided to give the Alpha5 an EV powertrain. The car will have iconic gullwing doors, but gone are the stainless steel body panels. ItalDesign sculpted the Alpha5’s shape just as they did the original, but many think Hyundai built a better looking “DeLorean” with their N Vision 74 concept. Even more people have simply written off the new DeLorean as vaporware.
That hasn’t stopped Mattel though! At the same moment the cover came off the concept car at Pebble, Hot Wheels announced a collaboration with the new DeLorean Reimagined company. Starting now, collectors can pre-order an exclusive set of a premium DeLorean Alpha5 1:64 scale car that has been paired with the iconic, OG DeLorean DMC-12. Both models receive the proper premium treatment with Real Rider wheels, metal chassis, and painted details. Mattel Creations will build these to order, so there’s no need to set your alarm to beat the bots in line. They’ll cost about $40 a pop, and you have until September 1st to reserve yours.
