The many styles of top customizer @Pdubrewer
One of my favorite customizers to follow on Instagram is Paul, aka Pdubrewer. He sent me three customs a few summers ago to photograph: a rusty VW Bus, a slammed 510 wagon, and a Datsun Fairlady nose slapped on the front of a 620 pickup. Some customizers pick a theme or a favorite cast and stick with it, but not Paul. Literally any car he touches turns into art.
Volkswagen Type 2 Bus
After receiving the shell from @jamespeterpanhw, Pdub painted, detailed, and weathered this bus to perfection. It rolls smooth on rubber Real Rider tires and even has a crack in the double-pane windshield. Anyone can respray a Hot Wheels car, but weathering takes talent! I wish I had this kind of patience, I would have had to just leave my car outside for months on end to get half this result.

Datsun 510 Wagon
It goes without saying that the Datsun 510 wagon has been one of the most popular and most successful Hot Wheels castings of the last decade. In addition to numerous releases from Mattel, this car has been a fan favorite for Hot Wheels customizers, including @Pdubrewer on Instagram.
You might be surprised to learn that this car’s hibiscus paint job is factory fresh. Paul felt that it aligned with his vision for this custom and left it completely untouched. He did, however, take it to the next level with a detailed grille and headlamps, tail lights, and wing mirrors. He also swapped and dropped it onto a set of custom wheels and axles fabricated by @78toy4dr, a fellow Hot Wheels customizer on Instagram. I can confirm it still rolls as smooth as glass even with all that negative camber! He also made sure the front-mounted intercooler really popped off the car’s face.

Datsun Fairlady 620
The bodywork, which is in fact the nose off a Hot Wheels Datsun Fairlady Roadster married to the business end of a 620 casting, was completed by @degatron73. The car was send to Paul for final assembly and completion. He sprayed the little truck in a sharp metallic silver and detailed the headlights and driving lamps. It is all set up on gold lace custom wheels wrapped in Yokohama Advan branded rubber. I still can’t get over how beautifully executed this mashup turned out!
