Matchbox Opening Parts: Legends
A while back, Matchbox sent us a whole case of their Opening Parts series. They were awesome and were surprisingly detailed, but I’ve struggled to find one I liked enough to grab off the pegs. Thankfully, my luck changed a few weeks ago when I found both a Ford GT40 and a Porsche 550 Spyder. Two absolute legends found on the same peg? I couldn’t believe it, and threw them in my shopping basket quicker than you can say “Matchbox.”

Ford GT40 MK I

Let’s start off with the GT40. The car that beat Ferrari! The MK I GT40 won at Daytona in 1965, and back-to-back wins at LeMans in ’68 and ’69. Finished in all white with a blue racing stripe, the iconic Ford rocks a white number 6 on its nose. Headlamps and taillights are full of detail, and those knock-off style wheels are the perfect shoes for this car. Some casting lines on the front end are a bit of a let down, but all is forgiven when you open up the rear clamshell!

Inside, you get to peak at the top half of its small block Ford V8. There’s loads of paint detail highlighting the valve covers, massive air filter, and plug wires. The engine cover stays propped open too, should you choose to display your Matchbox cars that way. With the Opening Parts series, why wouldn’t you?

Porsche 550 Spyder

Next up, we have this gorgeous Porsche 550: the infamous car that killed James Dean. This thing looks absolutely stunning with glossy black paint with a tan interior. In this spec, it looks more like an upscale touring car and less like a stripped down racer. Again, we’re treated with premium tampos with elegantly detailed headlights, a golden Porsche badge and crest, and silver grilles on the rear hatch. Sadly, my car got pretty beat up in its blister. It has light scratches all over!

Man, that looks so good! Underneath that gorgeous black hood you’ll find an air-cooled flat four, obviously! There’s the big ol’ fan, velocity stacks, plus suspension parts and the transmission case. I can’t decide which is better: hood up or hood down?

I’m so happy I found these! Looking forward to future sets from Matchbox. Maybe I should look for some extra premium wheels to swap onto these bad boys…
