The Princess and the Ford: Sun Star Restocks Princess Diana’s Ford Escort RS Turbo In Time For The Big Auction
There aren’t too many other people universally loved like Princess Diana. She even won over the hearts of Petrolheads when she would drive her three 1985 Ford Escort RS Turbos around on public London streets. Almost all RS Turbos came white from the factory, but Ford painted one black so Lady Di could blend into the background a little more than the red Escort Cabriolet she was urged to trade in. Yeah, right!

Sun Star actually released a 1/18 scale model of Princess Diana’s very special Ford back in April of this year. So why am I bringing this model to your attention now? Silverstone Auctions will be offering her very car to the highest bidder at their Classic Sale at Silverstone on August 27th! Sun Star announced via Facebook earlier this week that they’ve restocked this Escort in their online store to coincide with the event. According to their store, this model retails for $107 USD, and they have just 10 examples left in stock.

The model looks to be an excellent replica of the Princess’s Ford. It wears the same black paint as the real car, although it has a much thicker light blue sport stripe. I’d say they nailed the “more subtle” front grille and the driving lights mounted on the front bumper. The model even wears the correct “C462 FHK” number plate. It unfortunately doesn’t look like the secondary rear-view mirror or the wiring for the security radio in the glove box made it on to the model. Both mirror and radio were outfitted on the real car for the benefit of the detective that rode shotgun whenever the Princess had an errand to run. Sun Star’s interior also appears to be a lighter shade of grey than that of the car heading to auction. Images of the model on their Facebook page show one with a black dashboard and steering wheel, also different from the real car. Either way, I’m pleasantly surprised to see they’ve included carpeting! I don’t, however, see any photos of an open hood, I mean bonnet…
