Hittin’ Switches with the new Hot Wheels “Layin Low”
Is it just me, or are fantasy castings just all around better these days? This “new for 2022” Layin’ Low casting caught my eye at Target recently and was cool enough for me to grab. Hot Wheels has nothing but love for low riders and has released a number of slammed American classics over the years. This one though, has a really neat trick up its sleeve…

This car, to me anyway, is an obvious homage to the iconic 1964 Chevy Impala. I’m not sure why Mattel went with this unlicensed design when it has a ’64 Impala in its portfolio. Maybe they were sick of sending checks to GM? In fact, they released a RLC Impala with an adjustable suspension. Our Layin’ Low here does have a special feature too, but it has nothing to do with hydraulics. The front two tires have small notches protruding from the inner tire wall. As the car rolls, those tabs rock the engine poking through the hood back and forth. Neat!

I really love the paint job on this car too! You can’t go wrong with a classic light blue with pinstripes for days. There is also a dark maroon red colorway out there with chrome 5SP wheels. Now if you’ll excuse me, I’m going to see how slow I have to roll this thing to make the engine shake to It Was a Good Day.
