Hot Wheels brings the last Ford GT40 to life
Finally, we have a Hot Wheels Ford GT40 MkIV to add to our collections. The MkIV, as you may know, was the last generation of the legendary GT40 race cars. In fact, the MkIV GT40 was and remains the only car designed and built in the good ol’ US of A to win the whole thing. After the infamous prototype for the MkII’s successor, dubbed the J-car, claimed the lives of both Ken Miles and Walt Hansgen, Ford heavily fortified the chassis. The J-car evolved into this, the MkIV, and raced in two 24 hour events in 1967: Daytona and Le Mans.
It won both.

This new casting launched from Hot Wheels earlier this year. The initial release is painted like the livery of the ’67 Le Mans winning car driven by Dan Gurney and A.J. Foyt. I love that the late Ryu Asada, the Hot Wheels designer behind this great casting, stayed dedicated to the details. He even included the custom fitted “Gurney Bubble” in the roof! It looks as good as the one that Wayne Carini has for sale too…

I’m going to nitpick two things that I dislike about my particular Hot Wheels Ford GT40 MkIV. The first is that the front stripe tampos aren’t clean enough to my liking, but that’s easily forgivable. I really dislike what happens below those racing stripes. The underside of the front clip is actually plastic; a part of the chassis plate. It’s a weird split because the side rocker panels and the entire tail are metal. The color seems to match up nicely, but I’m curious to see how this holds up over time.

I’m excited to see what other releases are in store for this Hot Wheels Ford GT40 MkIV. Since this initial release, they’ve also dropped one in yellow and black stripes that mimics the livery worn by the ’67 Daytona winner. Back to hunting!
