Maximum Nostalgia: Matchbox’s AMC Eagle
Lifted, side wood paneling, station wagon… must be the AMC Eagle. Quite possibly the grandfather of the Crossover craze, the AMC Eagle was one of the first vehicles to combine off-road ruggedness with a comfortable ride for the whole family. It was also one of the first cars to utilize an All Wheel Drive system. The Eagle also is to blame for the death of the Pacer.

AMC lifted the Eagle a full three inches to allow for better ground clearance. It was also available as a liftback and a sedan, but the station wagon dominated sales. AMC built and sold over 100,000 wagon Eagles over its eight year lifespan.

Matchbox has just brought a 1980 AMC Eagle to collectors this year, part of their MBX Off-Road series. The car itself might be hideous, but the Matchbox looks amazing! It’s got mudflaps and a visible driveshaft, which seems like a nod to oldschool Matchbox 4×4’s. The wood side paneling looks like it got at least three taps from the pad printer. We also get “4 Wheel Drive” and “Eagle” badges as well. I love the wheel choice too.

One major letdown though, is that front grille. It’s all plastic, just a solid block of plastic. Sure, there is texture present for the front grille and headlights, but this would look much better if it were made out of metal. Maybe some paint would have taken this thing up a notch too. Other than that, this is a fantastic, nostalgic piece you need for your Rad-era collection.
