The Dark Horse, Lightweight Contender… KK Scale’s F40 in Black
Hopefully you have all had a chance to catch pics online of that gorgeous Nardo Grey F40 Competizione that RM Sotheby’s just auctioned off during Car Week. If you’re anything like me, an alarm probably sounded off in your head to double check your diecast collection to make sure you actually have a F40 already! The most recent F40 I’ve added to my 1/18 collection is this one: the KK Scale F40 Lightweight in black.

Clearly this is no, sexy Competizione F40. It’s dubbed the “F40 Lightweight”, but where exactly does the “Lightweight” designation come from? A journey across the Internet leads us right back to… a diecast model! From what I could gather, Kyosho slapped OZ style wheels on their F40 model, called it a “Lightweight”, and sold them. I suppose this makes this KK Scale a sealed-diecast replica of Kyosho’s scale model.

Yes, it is a sealed body car. No giant, rear hatch to open and gaze upon that turbo V8. No front clamshell to swing upward to find the spare tire mounted on a fifth OZ wheel. That said, the F40 silhouette does the work itself: mega shelf candy. I went with the black paint on black wheels model to be a little different. I do already have an old, opening Hot Wheels 1/18 model in red, so don’t fret too hard. Save the pearl clutching for when I tell you I prefer the KK!

It isn’t perfect though, of course. Black paint is a very fickle beast, and incredibly unforgiving. There is an awful lot of orange peel going on the rear quarters of both sides of the car. I found another flaw on the nose of the car while taking photos: there appears to be some sort of bubble or casting defect near the passenger side headlight. A beautymark, if you will.

In conclusion, these KK Scales are some of the cheaper options out there, and probably the most available too. You can find plenty of these for sale online for around $100 a pop. Good luck finding the original Kyosho “Lightweight” F40 and still be able to walk around with two kidneys in your body.
