When the sealed car is the better model… KK Scale’s 1:18 Ferrari 288 GTO
KK Scale has been churning out classic Ferrari’s like nobody’s business, from the 512BB, the ’84 Testarossa with the single high side mirror, and the Group B-inspired 288 GTO.
As iconic as the 288 GTO is, your choices for a 1:18 scale are pretty limited, much like the BMW E39 M5. You could find a Bburago model for cheap, but they’ve been producing that model for well over thirty years and haven’t really changed it a bit. You could shell out a bunch more money for the later Hot Wheels Elite release. I’ve never seen one up close in person before, but from pics online, it looks a lot like the Bburago casting with an extra coat of paint. Don’t look up BBR’s GTO models on eBay without a third kidney to sell, and forget about Amalgam’s work of art unless you have mixed feelings about your first born child.
KK Scale’s model ends up being the perfect compromise for around $100. Yes, it is a sealed diecast model, so you won’t be able to open the doors or look at the twin-turbo V8 in the back. What you do get, however, is a car that is a million times more detailed than the venerable Bburago. Unlike most resin models, KK’s diecast cars feature steerable front wheels, so that’s something.
My particular models makes for great shelf candy, but it certainly wasn’t perfect. I had to clean up some gobs of glue off the tail-lights and some of the chrome of the front passenger wheel’s trim ring was already flaking off. I do wish the cast lines of the infinite number of grilles on the nose of the car were deeper and more defined. The lines of the pop-up headlights also could have used more definition. If rarity is your thing, KK Scale only made 500 of these models in yellow, along with 500 cars in black and 2000 in Ferrari Red.
